Looking for a DARE alternative?
DARE teaches a single response to anxiety in four steps — Defuse, Allow, Run toward, Engage. relif takes the opposite approach: 20+ techniques, guided breathing, journals and an AI companion, free to download in eight languages.

Guided breathing, one count at a time
A single expanding circle paces each inhale, hold and exhale, so you can follow along without reading anything.

Disclosure
relif is our app. Details were checked on 3 September 2026. DARE’s method is its own; we describe it here as its users would recognise it, and you should read DARE’s own material before deciding.
What DARE’s four steps are
DARE is built on one idea: anxiety escalates when you fight it, so the response is to move toward the sensation rather than away.
- Defuse — meet the “what if” thought with a shrug rather than an answer.
- Allow — stop trying to make the feeling stop; let the wave be there.
- Run toward — deliberately invite more of the sensation instead of bracing against it.
- Engage — put your attention back on something in the world.
It sits in the acceptance tradition rather than the control tradition, and for a lot of people that reframing is the thing that finally clicks. relif does not teach this method, and if it is what works for you, DARE is where it is taught properly.

What DARE does better
- Coherence. One method, consistently applied, is easier to internalise than twenty options. Depth beats breadth when you are learning a response under stress.
- A named framework you can carry. Four words you can remember without your phone is a real asset. relif has no equivalent single mnemonic.
- Audio coaching quality built around that one method, rather than spread across a catalogue.
Where relif differs
- No single method to buy into. If DARE’s framing does not click, there is not much left in the app. relif’s bet is the opposite: give people several things and let them find the one that works.
- Something to type to. Liam holds the context across conversations, which no fixed audio programme can.
- A structured alternative. Three 21-day audio journeys — general calm, social anxiety, and panic and health worry — at 10–15 minutes a day, if you do want a programme.
- Language coverage and RTL. Eight languages with per-locale adaptation.
Who should pick which
- Pick DARE if you want one method taught thoroughly, and the acceptance framing appeals to you.
- Pick relif if you would rather experiment across techniques, want an AI companion, or need the app in a language DARE does not serve.
- Neither treats an anxiety disorder. If anxiety is affecting daily life, the intervention with the strongest evidence is therapy — see the evidence page.
Common questions
Does relif teach the DARE method?
No. relif’s closest equivalent is Thought Reframe, an eight-step question flow inspired by Byron Katie’s The Work. It is a different tradition — examining the thought rather than moving toward the sensation.
Is one approach better evidenced than the other?
Neither app has published trials of itself. Acceptance-based and cognitive-restructuring approaches both sit inside broader evidence bases; what that evidence does and does not support is set out on our evidence page.
Which has a better free tier?
relif’s free tier is usable daily — unlimited guided breathing, three relief techniques and five AI messages a day. See pricing.
